Ask your Congressperson in favor of support of Tran Huynh Duy Thuc
If you live in the United States, please send the following message to your Representatives and urge them to seek the release of Tran Huynh Duy Thuc, who is:
- A human rights defender working for economic and social reforms,
- In jail for his peaceful activities by speaking out at community events on the absence of freedom of expression in Vietnam.
I write to you out of deep concern for Mr Tran Huynh Duy Thuc – a Vietnamese human rights defender – who has been convicted and imprisoned by Vietnamese authorities for peacefully exercising his right to freedom of expression. Tran Huynh Duy Thuc is currently serving a 16-year prison sentence for his peaceful work advocating for the respect for human rights and social and economic reforms in Vietnam. In both of his first instance and appeal trials, international rights groups including Human Rights Watch, Amnesty International and Reporters Without Border have condemned the lack of due process and public hearings. On his part, Mr Thuc testified that he had previously been subjected to ill-treatment and duress during pre-trial detention, and solitary confinement while serving his term.
In 2012, the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention concluded that the deprivation of liberty of Tran Huynh Duy Thuc was arbitrary and in contravention of articles 9, 19 and 21 of the International Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, to which Vietnam is a party. Amnesty International considers Thuc a Prisoner of Conscience. Therefore, I urge you to ask the US Government, through its tightening relations with the Government of Vietnam, to call for the immediate release of Tran Huynh Duy Thuc. Until his release, I would like for Thuc’s physical and psychological integrity to be ensured.
Finally, I urge you to call upon the Vietnamese authorities to uphold the right to freedom of expression, association and assembly in Vietnam and to ensure that all human rights defenders are able to carry out their work without political interference and hindrance.
Thank you for your attention to this important matter.
Thank you for taking action for Tran Huynh Duy Thuc.
